" ___ ないで "

The phrase "ないで" in Japanese is used express the actions "without doing" something else.

It can be applied to verbs, nouns, and adjectives to convey the idea of refraining from or not engaging in a specific action. 

Examples :

彼女 は 僕の方 を 見ないで  行きました。

She went without looking at me.

こども は あさごはん を 食べないで 出かけた。

Child went out without eating breakfast.

Practice Conversation 1 :

H: こんにちは、昨日のパーティー、楽しかったんですか？

K: うん、楽しかったけど、友達と話さないで、帰ってしまった。

H: そうなんだ。何かあったの？

K: 急用があって早く帰らないといけなかった。

Practice Conversation 2 :

A: こんにちは、昨日のパーティー、楽しかった？

A: Konnichiwa, kinou no paatii, tanoshikatta?

A: Good day, was yesterday's party fun?

B: うん、楽しかったけど、友達と話さないで、帰ってしまった。

B: Un, tanoshikatta kedo, tomodachi to hanasanaide, kaette shimatta.

B: Yeah, it was fun, but my friend left without talking to anyone.

A: そうなんだ。何かあったの？

A: Sou nan da. Nani ka atta no?

A: Oh, really? Was there something wrong?

B: いや、特に何もなかったんだけど、急用があって早く帰らないといけなかったみたい。

B: Iya, toku ni nani mo nakatta n dakedo, kyuuyou ga atte hayaku kaeranakya ikenakatta mitai.

B: No, there wasn't anything specific, but it seemed like she had some urgent matter and had to leave early.

A: それは残念だね。でも、彼女と話さないで帰るなんて、少し寂しい感じがするね。

A: Sore wa zannen da ne. Demo, kanojo to hanasanaide kaeru nante, sukoshi sabishii kanji ga suru ne.

A: That's unfortunate. But leaving without talking to her feels a bit lonely, doesn't it?

B: うん、でも次の機会にちゃんと話すことにしたよ。今度はゆっくり話せるといいな。

B: Un, demo tsugi no kikai ni chanto hanasu koto ni shita yo. Kondo wa yukkuri hanaseru to ii na.

B: Yeah, but I've decided to talk to her properly next time. Hopefully, we can have a leisurely conversation then.

A: そうだね。それにしても、パーティーの料理、美味しかったよね。

A: Sou da ne. Sore ni shite mo, paatii no ryouri, oishikatta yo ne.

A: That sounds good. By the way, the food at the party was delicious, wasn't it?

B: 本当に美味しかった。食べないで 帰るのが心残りだけど、仕方ないよね。

B: Hontou ni oishikatta. tabenaide kaeru no ga kokoro nokori dakedo, shikata nai yo ne.

B: It was really tasty. It's regrettable to leave without eating, but it can't be helped.

A: そうだね。また次のイベントで一緒に楽しもう！

A: Sou da ne. Mata tsugi no ibento de issho ni tanoshimou!

A: True. Let's enjoy together again at the next event!
